Installing Lightening and Provider Add-ons to Thunderbird

A friend of mine who uses Thunderbird to access his GroupWise email reminded me yesterday about the calendar plugin, Lightening. Here’s the link to download Lightening: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar It is a plugin to Thunderbird, so after you download it to your computer, you’ll need to install it to Thunderbird. No problem . . . follow my steps:

  1. Save the Lightening file to your computer
  2. In Mozilla Thunderbird, open Add-ons from the Tools menu.
  3. Click the Install button, and locate/select the file you downloaded and click “OK”.

Your calendar is installed in Thunderbird! But you’ll need or want to take another step in integrating all of your calendars and be able to update and access this info from any computer or mobile device. How do you do this? Use Google calendar and its XML feed to sync with Lightening. For this, you’ll need to download just one more program and take one more step. Stay with me here . . . Download Provider, which is another Thunderbird add-on. This allows bi-directional access to all of your Google calendars (which, in simple language, means that you can edit either calendar, Lightening or Google, and it will show up on both calendars.) Pretty cool, huh? After you download Provider, the steps are pretty much the same you took to install Lightening in to Thunderbird:

  1. In Mozilla Thunderbird, open Add-ons from the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Install button, and locate/select the file you downloaded and click “OK”.

Here’s a quick video I produced that shows you how to do all this. A picture, um, video is worth a thousand words . . .

Monday, I’ll show you how to use Google calendar with Lightening to make everything work together. All you need is a Google account and start using the calendar, which I think you’ll like a lot.
